Native to northern Australia, Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil is known for its refreshing aroma that helps create an invigorating environment. Lemon Eucalyptus comes from a different kind of tree than Eucalyptus oil. Lemon eucalyptus is a common nickname for the tree, but it is also called the lemon-scented gum and blue spotted gum.
Despite its name, Lemon Eucalyptus is not citrus. Like Lemon Myrtle and Lemongrass oil, it simply has a lemony aroma.
doTerra sources their Lemon Eucalyptus from Kenya and Australia. The flowers of lemon eucalyptus are an excellent source of nectar for honeybees and butterflies and are often grown as a bee crop. It takes about 3 pounds of plant matter to produce one 15mL bottle of essential oil!
Years ago, I was shopping for mosquito spray and looking for a more natural, nontoxic version. This was before I knew about essential oils, but the one I found was made with "lemon eucalyptus oil" and I did a little research about it. I found out that studies had shown that lemon eucalyptus oil was just as effective or more than other common mosquito sprays on the market at deterring mosquitos and other annoying bugs!
Now, I know how effective essential oils are at doing what you need them to do without harming your body systems, so I'll be sticking with them for the long run.
As of September 2019, there had been 59+ published studies and 2 clinical studies about the benefits of Lemon Eucalyptus.
Citronellal and citronellol are the main chemical constituents in Lemon Eucalyptus, which provide the oil with cleansing properties. It also has analgesic and antispasmodic qualities.

The 9th Edition of Essential Emotions tells us this:
Lemon Eucalyptus creates protected space around individuals. This is especially helpful when they are feeling overly exposed to natural elements or energetic forces. Feeling self-contained is an energetic need and a human right. Individuals become disoriented and less effective when they have been too open and exposed to external energies for too long. Lemon Eucalyptus helps individuals recognize when they need to create more effective boundaries and maintain their personal space.

Experience Lemon Eucalyptus: Add 2 drops into your hands and rub together and inhale to uplift your day and to feel brighter. I just did this right as I sat down to write this blog! At first, I wasn't a fan of the scent...but then the scent seemed to change to a pleasant natural smell as if I was standing in a garden! And who doesn't feel cheery in a garden?
You can also use it these ways:
- Aromatic:
- inhale from bottle or diffuse
- Topical:
dilute 1-2 drops with carrier oil and apply on bottoms of feet
- Environmental:
add several drops into a spray bottle and mist around home or use as a personal bug repellent.
